FBI sources in New York City said they received a tip from San Francisco police about Mangione’s possible identity following the Dec. 4 shooting in midtown Manhattan.

“The New York FBI conducted routine investigative activities and referred this information and other leads to the New York City Police Department as part of their investigation assistance,” officials said. “Extensive sharing of photos by law enforcement led to identification by the public and subsequent arrest by the Altoona Police Department.”

Fox News previously confirmed that San Francisco police investigators recognized Mangione from a wanted poster created by police and passed it on to the FBI while the suspect was still at large.
